What would consume more petrol on the motorway/highway, a big engined car or a small engined car ?

I know a big engined car would use up more fuel doing urban driving, but how about on the motorways?
i was having an argument with a friend and he was saying a mercedes S500 would consume less petrol than like a VW golf 1.6 on a motorway. obviously i thought otherwise?
